Dark Matter

Dark Matter, Dark Energy: The Dark Side of the Universe

Taught by Sean Carroll

There's more to the universe than meets the eye—a lot more.

In recent years, scientists have discovered that 95% of the contents of the cosmos are invisible to our current methods of direct detection. Yet something is holding galaxies and galaxy clusters together, and something else is causing space to fly apart.

Scientists call these invisible components dark matter and dark energy; "dark" because these phenomena do not emit light, not because we are not leaning more and more about them. In fact, dark matter and dark energy are the most eagerly studied subjects in astronomy and particle physics today.

If and when we discover this matter, it will further validate the "standard model" of physics which, so far, is the best description of how our universe works; if we cannot find this matter, or if it does not exist, then we will completely need to rethink the current "standard model" theory.
Creation and the First and Second Law of Thermodynamics
November 30, Clara Hazelwood

God created life by speaking it into existence. Genesis 1:1 states that "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." So first he created the matter and energy, then used the energy to shape the material.

John 1:1-4 says,
"1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men." (NAS)

The first law of thermodynamics states that no new matter or energy is being created at this time. This is in accordance with Biblical teaching (See Genesis 2:1-2)

"1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts.
2 And by the seventh day God completed His work which He had done; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done." (NAS)

According to this verse, creation is finished. That doesn't mean that there cannot be change in the state of matter and energy, but the amount remains constant.

The second law of thermodynamics states, in common language, that everything tends to go from a more organized state to a less organized state. Eventually matter and energy will level out to a constant temperature and there will be no more activity of any kind.

But God holds everything together by his power and sustains things beyond even the best scientist's ability to understand. Atoms, the building blocks of the universe, would fly apart into chaos without something holding them together. And no one yet understands what that is. But we have the word of God that he, himself is the one who holds the universe together.

"For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-- all things have been created by Him and for Him.
And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together*."
(Col 1:16-17 , NAS)

Scientist call these unseen elements Dark Matter and Dark Energy. They built CERN to try to figure out what this stuff is. They even say that they are searching for 'The God Particle'. Their reasoning is that if we can figure it all out, we'll prove that Evolution doesn't need God to explain our existence. God is Light and Truth. He knows the name of this matter. It is definitely not the 'Dark side of the Force'. Like Star Wars; 'may the force be with you, this force is God's Holy Spirit. That Spirit you receive when you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior. You yourself are held together and if not for God you would fly apart; totally disintegrate. Hence the term 'coming unglued'.

Here's one that's simply amazing ....Hebrews 11:3 3: Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. How interesting that this verse is in the middle of the verses that God uses to explain faith ! "...These constant miracle we are a part of is also spoken of in (2 Cor. 4:18)-we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen; for the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal." Wow ! Is God not the most awesome being ever ! His word is beautiful and true beyond anything we could imagine !
It was only in mankinds recent history were the building blocks of the universe were found. The atom is the smallest known thing in the the universe. The entire structure has an approximate diameter of 10-8 centimeter or 1/1,000,000,000. Man cant see that small but God can ! God created the atom which are the building blocks of the universe. They are constantly in motion. So what keeps things in front of us from exploding? Why doesn't all matter in the universe just fall apart. Because God holds them together !!!
If God were to merely relax His grasp on the universe every atom would come apart "by fire" and that will happen one day. God said it would in (2 Peter 3:10) "But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise and the elements (atoms) will be dissolved with fire and the earth and the works that are upon it will be burned up." This will be a day that none wants to be a part of. According to the bible, if you are saved now, you wont be a part of it.
"Of old thou didst lay the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They will perish, but thou dost endure; they will all wear out like a garment. Thou changest them like raiment, and they pass away; but thou art the same, and thy years have no end." (Psalm 102:25-27) God is the beginning of the universe, the present and God the end. Who could stand in the way of His Glory? NONE ! Without Him we could not BE; we could not exist. Acts 17:28 28: For in him we live, and move, and have our being..... ; God is the ONE who holds us and the universe together ! Colossians 1:1-17 16: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
God created the universe, and only HE holds it together. The power of God is beyond anything any man could ever imagine.
It is interesting to note that science also has only recently discovered that our universe is expanding. Galaxies are moving away from each other. : Psalm 104:2 Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:God wrote this more than 2500 years ago.
